Meaning and Tone

Inflection - A modulation of the voice; change in pitch or tone of voice

The tone of your voice, your inflection, carries the meaning of your message as much, if not more, than your words and sentence structure.  Authentic expression and vocal change

One of the most common obstacles to voice improvement is the fear that new voices are not authentic, that one is putting on an act.

Please don’t let this hold you back.

Your voice has been held in a limiting place by habit, that is all. You have a much wider voice range now, so naturally, you will begin to use it within your daily conversations. Be assured that, as you remove throat tension, your voice becomes more pleasant and authentic.

Sometimes you project attitudes you may not intend because of unconscious vocal habits.

The best way to break these well-ingrained habits is to expand your expressive range; to experiment with new voices and emotions.

Authentic expression and vocal change

One of the most common obstacles to voice improvement is the fear that new voice colors are not authentic.

Please don’t let this hold you back.

Are your words any less true if you change the tonality of your voice?

Have you ever noticed that you use a low, gruff, or gravelly vocal tone to show meaning? Do you believe people will take your message more seriously?

You’ve just learned that the one movement that most hinders your vocal health is to press inward upon the larynx to make those gruff, gravelly tones. You have a much wider voice range now, so naturally, you will begin to use it within your daily conversations. Be assured that, as you remove throat tension, your voice becomes more pleasant and authentic.

Truth rings true!

If something is true, it’s true. It has the, “Ring of truth.”

You don’t need to emphasize it by choking yourself.

When you take the pressure off your larynx, you can more easily match the tone of your voice to your emotions and intentions.

Exercise #1 - Attitude Game

  • Look into the mirror.
  • Express the following emotions using hmm, um-hm and/or mmmm.
  • Observe how your vocal core shifts with each attitude.
  • When do you unconsciously constrict the points of your vocal core?
  • When you notice that you constrict your vocal core, try a different approach without tension.

Questions:

  1. Where do you press inward?  Larynx? Head? Tummy? Neck?

  2. On which emotions do you press inward, or lose your neutral vocal core position?
  3. Does the tone carry more meaning when it is pressed?

Exercise #2 - Emotions and Breath

In order to strengthen and tone your voice, you must have enough breath. But, if you unconsciously close your throat when you try to convey a meaning or emotion, you cut off the very breath supply that is supposed to fuel your message.

Do close your throat and your vocal core with specific emotions?

Do you get “choked” up when you speak your true feelings?

With this voice study, you are learning to have and express your message without choking yourself. In fact, the more you speak from your heart, without vocal tension and obstruction, the stronger your voice will become.

Your first step is to notice which attitudes you most tend to press inward.

  • Look into the mirror.
  • Silently, move between the list of emotions.

  • Observe how your breathing capacity shifts with each attitude.
  • Do you close or constrict your vocal core with an emotion?
  • Release any held breath.
  • Replace the unconscious tension with another expression.

Practical application - Clear, Clean and Strong Vocal Tone

You can have emotions without also disrupting your vocal core. When you move your vocal body out of place, your voice may lose its strength and vibrancy.

It’s important to catch these unconscious habits and train yourself to maintain an open and unimpeded vocal posture.

Vocabulary

Inflection - A modulation of the voice; change in pitch or tone of voice.

Vocal Fry - A common term for a pressed voice. When used too often, it can damage, or “fry” your vocal cords/folds. It is most noticeable as a gruff or hoarse vocal sound, especially at the end of sentences.
