  • Inside Voice vs. Pressed Voice

Today we will discover your real, most healthy and beautiful voice! It is the healthy, centering core voice that can grow from a tiny coo to a mighty roar without pain or stress. The sound of the voice that carries your words.

We are all born with a healthy and strong baby voice. But, as we form our coos and cries into language, we also engage muscular movements that move our voices out of their naturally healthy positions. Today we return to your first and most healthy, natural voice!

In the first few days of this training, you have not made vocal sound so that you can unwind and rest your vocal habits. You’ve established a neutral position of the critical parts of your vocal core to make room for your real voice. Now that you’ve released tension and stress from your larynx and vocal core, you can observe how easy and pain-free your natural voice really is.

Your “inside voice" is your most healthy, natural voice.

Voice Production

To find your inside voice, let’s review how your voice is produced.

  • Air from your lungs passes through your vocal cords and causes them to make a small sound.
  • The small sound passes up into the mouth and vocal core and lands inside resonating spaces that are perfectly sized to capture each sound wave.
  • The sound waves bounce around and reverberate inside of these spaces, causing the sound to amplify or grow louder.

Inside Voice

Inside voice is the voiced sound that occurs when the sound waves from the larynx find their perfectly sized resonating spaces in your vocal core. You don’t have to force or push the sound waves into their resonating pockets. They naturally move to their resonating pockets if there is no impedance in the vocal core. When the small sound waves from the larynx hit their resonant "pocket" they create a distinctly clear and ringing sound. They ring true. They also have a distinct sensation within the vocal core. You will learn to trust the sensations from the inside voice as it moves within you instead of the gradations of larynx and throat tension of your past.

​You will soon learn to move only along its predictable and healthy core path.

Smaller is Stronger

​Your inside voice is your smallest, most powerful and perfectly healthy sound. No other vocal tone is more important than this. It is the prime core tone that fuels a rich, resonant and expressive vocal tone.

​How to find your Inside Voice

Assume the home and neutral positions of the parts of the vocal core:

  • Mind focused only upon the vocal core
  • Head passive with horizontal line between the ears, back of head is "soft"
  • Eyes open and soft with eyebrows at rest
  • Lips are closed and relaxed​.
  • Jaw "hangs" from the face and creates a slight space between the teeth
  • Tongue rests flat on the floor of your mouth
  • Larynx is passive, breath is silent
  • Chest naturally rises and falls with the flow of the breath. Shoulders passive.

Follow the flow of the breath in and out of your upper body. Don’t force breath in or out. Simply observe your circle of breath in and out.

​Exercise #1 - Part 1 - Hum

Healthy Hum

Make a humming sound and bring it as low in volume as you can without whispering. It should sound childlike and pure, without rasp​yness. You should now feel a very clear sensation tone and vibration. You have just brought your voice “inside."

Exercise #1 - Part 2 - Contrast - healthy/unhealthy

Your voice is effortless, small and sweet, as though comforting a baby or small animal. You will recognize this voice, as you have used it all of your life.

That small tone is your most healthy voice.

All other tones swell in relationship to the integrity of this little inside voice. No tension. No impedance. Just simple, clear tone. This easy, inside sensation of vibration replaces the stressed and raspy sensation of tension. Notice how your voice sounds to you from inside your head?

Inside voice is home.

Inside voice is the home place that will always realign and center you. When you catch yourself pressing against your larynx and throat when you speak or sing, your certain remedy is to bring your voice inside.

Contrast Pressed Voice vs. Inside Voice

You now know the sensation of a healthy vocal tone.

​Your task is to detect when your larynx presses inward. If your throat and larynx press inward towards the tone, then you’re moving your larynx in the wrong direction.

All of your vocal sounds emanate from the sweet center tone you explored on the hum. It is important to detect the very moment when a healthy throat becomes a tense throat.

We will compare and contrast the two sensations, healthy and unhealthy, at a low volume to sharpen your awareness of this invisible vocal habit.

  • Make a little, easy humming sound and slowly press against the larynx until it feels scratchy. The sound will lose its sweetness. Take notice of discomfort in your throat.
  • Explore how it enters and subsides with the soft or loudness of the hum.
  • Notice if your larynx and neck, throat or head muscles clamp inward to assist this tiny little sound.
  • Return to your inside voice: a very sweet small hum.
  • Remember to bring your lips up into a small smile to help open the resonating spaces of the inside voice.

Practice moving between the inside voice and the pressed voice until you know the difference.

This is one of your greatest skills: to detect and release inward pressing on the larynx when you make a vocal sound.
